Photography Tip: Creating Feeling Through Vision

Ok, so this will be short and sweet. Ever wonder how some pictures tell you more than just what you see? Like for example, sometimes you look at a picture and feel cold, or scared, or happy? Your senses are very powerful, especially your sense of sight.

A good photographer can use his or her artistic vision to manipulate your feelings. Sometimes a few simple edits on a photograph can make you feel completely different when you're looking at it. Take this photo for example:

When looking at this photo, what are some things you feel? There is snow on the ground, so you feel cold. You see the dark, menacing clouds in the sky, so it feels even colder and a bit dark. Like a storm is present or approaching.

But what if I took the same photograph and showed it to you in color?

Now the feeling is completely different. Yes, there is still snow on the ground, but the blue skies and feathery clouds give this photograph a much happier, fun look. The first photo made you want to stay inside by the fireplace, but the second made you want to get your winter gear on and play in the snow.

So you see, it's all in perception, and a good artist will help mold that perception for you.

Until next time......
